Running

More VO₂max, more red blood cells and a higher lactate threshold towards your marathon, half marathon or trail run. Sleep high, train low.

Recommended preparation6 weeks
Sleep altitude2,000 m → 2,800 m
Taper before the race10 days

Taper 10 days before the marathon.

For runners the principle is simple: you sleep at altitude for four to six weeks while following your normal training schedule at sea level. Seven to ten days before your peak race you taper so you start fully recovered. Michel Butter ran a big personal best after his first altitude block.

De hoogtent heeft al voor een hele goed indruk gezorgd tijdens trainingen. Jammer genoeg zijn er geen wedstrijden, omwille van de Corona, om mijn vorm te bewijzen.

    Cooperation and referral

Training advice for endurance athletes and for treks and climbs above 3,000 metres: training at simulated altitude as a performance stimulus and as pre-acclimatisation, with an altitude training schedule for the preparation.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good SpO₂ value in the altitude tent?

Measure your oxygen saturation every morning. At 94% or higher raise the altitude, between 90 and 93% hold (the optimal adaptation zone), at 89% or lower reduce the altitude.

When do I stop sleeping at altitude before my race?

Athletes usually stop 7 to 10 days before their peak race so the body is fully recovered. Mountaineers keep sleeping at altitude until just before departure so the acclimatisation is as fresh as possible.
