Three people from Kempen left for Nepal yesterday to climb the highest mountain in the world. In May the experienced climbers Urbain Lenaerts (55) from Vorselaar, Rudi Van de Poel (55) from Herenthout and Ludo De Ceulaer (61) from Olen want to be on top of Mount Everest. Only sixteen Belgians ever did that to them.
Urbain, Rudi and Ludo have known each other for years. They are all three members of climbing club Bergstijgers Kempen vzw. Together they climbed high mountains before, including the Cho Oyu in 2011. At 8,201 meters, that is the fifth highest mountain in the world and is also located in the Himalayas. “In fact, the Cho Oyu is somewhat similar in technical terms to Mount Everest. It is also a mountain that is higher than 8,000 meters, only Mount Everest is 650 meters higher. So we are in a 'dead zone' longer (zone so called because of the low oxygen level above 8,000 meters, ed.), "The three climbers say. “Because we have already been able to climb the Cho Oyu, we have already had a good preparation. We know about what awaits us. Although it is much busier on Mount Everest. We hope there won't be too many people, so we don't have to wait. If we are not at the top at noon, we have to turn back ”, Urbain explains.
